One of the most exciting things about witchcraft is that there are many different ways to practice spellcraft. Although the techniques may look different, they all share the same foundation: a clear intention, focused energy, symbolism, and action.

As you explore your practice, you'll naturally discover which methods resonate with you. Some witches enjoy simple candle spells, while others prefer creating spell jars, knot magick, or enchanted objects. There is no "best" method, only the one that feels right for you.

Candle Magick

One of the most popular forms of spellcraft, candle magick uses the symbolism of fire to focus your intention and release energy toward a desired outcome. Candle colors, herbs, oils, and carvings can all be used to personalize your spell, but even a simple white candle is enough to begin.

Spell Jars

Spell jars combine herbs, crystals, written intentions, and other symbolic items inside a small jar to represent a specific goal or desire. They are often kept on an altar, buried, or carried with you as a physical reminder of your intention.

Spell Bags

A spell bag, sometimes called a mojo bag, charm bag, or sachet, is a small pouch filled with herbs, crystals, charms, written affirmations, or other correspondences chosen for a specific purpose. Unlike spell jars, these are often carried in a pocket, purse, or worn on the body so their symbolism remains close throughout the day.

Knot Magick

Knot magick uses cords, ribbons, or rope to tie intentions into physical knots. Each knot represents a focused thought or affirmation, making this a simple yet powerful technique for manifestation, protection, healing, or releasing unwanted habits.

Enchantments

Enchantments involve intentionally charging an everyday object with a specific purpose. Jewelry, candles, jewelry boxes, journals, keys, coins, or even a favorite mug can become personal reminders of your intention whenever you use them.

Charms, Amulets & Talismans

Charms, amulets, and talismans are all objects that carry symbolic meaning, but they each serve a slightly different purpose.

  • Charms are objects believed to attract good fortune, invite positive energy, or symbolize a particular intention. They are often carried, worn as jewelry, hung in the home, or added to keychains and charm bracelets.

  • Amulets are traditionally used for protection. They are believed to ward off negative influences, unwanted energy, or bad luck, and are commonly worn or carried close to the body.

  • Talismans are intentionally charged or enchanted for a specific purpose, such as attracting prosperity, encouraging confidence, improving creativity, or supporting success. Unlike an amulet, which is generally protective, a talisman is created to draw a particular type of energy or outcome into your life.

Whether you wear a necklace, carry a lucky coin, keep a crystal in your pocket, or enchant a piece of jewelry, the true power comes from the intention you place into the object and the meaning it holds for you.

Poppet Magick

Poppets are symbolic representations of a person, situation, or goal. Contrary to popular myths, they are not inherently negative. Many witches create poppets for healing, self-improvement, protection, comfort, or blessing someone from afar.

Sigil Magick

A sigil is a symbol created to represent a specific intention. Once designed, it can be drawn on paper, carved into a candle, added to artwork, carried in a wallet, as part of your decor, used in a spell or ritual, or even incorporated into a tattoo! Sigils are one of the simplest and most creative forms of modern spellcraft.

Petition Magick

A petition spell involves working with a spiritual entity, often a god or goddess, to involve them in the manifestation of your magick in some way. It usually means writing your request on a piece of paper, often accompanied by a prayer, affirmation, offering or sigil. The petition may then be placed beneath a candle, folded into a spell jar, buried, burned safely, or carried with you depending on the spiritual entity and the purpose of the spell.

Kitchen Magick

Kitchen witchery brings magick into everyday cooking and baking. Herbs, spices, stirring patterns, blessings, and mindful intention transform ordinary meals into acts of nourishment, gratitude, and manifestation.

Floor Washes & Home Blessings

Many traditions include spiritually cleansing and blessing the home using infused water, herbs, essential oils, or other symbolic ingredients. These rituals are often performed during seasonal changes, after difficult experiences, or when moving into a new home.

Moon Magick

Many witches align their spellwork with the phases of the Moon. The lunar cycle provides a natural rhythm for setting intentions, attracting opportunities, celebrating achievements, and releasing what no longer serves you.

Which Technique Is Best?

There is no single "best" form of spellcraft. Every technique is simply another way of focusing your intention and expressing your creativity.

Some witches work almost exclusively with candles. Others love creating spell jars or carrying charm bags. You may even combine several techniques into one ritual.

The most important thing isn't choosing the "perfect" spell. It's choosing a practice that feels meaningful to you and approaching it with intention, mindfulness, and an open heart.
