There is something wonderfully simple about simmer pot magick. You don't need an elaborate altar, expensive tools, or a long list of hard-to-find ingredients. Sometimes all you need is a pot of water, a few herbs and spices from your kitchen, and a clear intention.

Simmer pots have become increasingly popular in recent years as a natural way to make your home smell beautiful, but they can also be used as a simple form of household magick.

By choosing ingredients according to their traditional magickal correspondences, a simmer pot can be created for prosperity, protection, love, psychic development, cleansing, healing, and many other intentions.

And if you want to take those correspondences one step further, you can also align your simmer pot with the traditional planetary energy associated with each day of the week.

So, let's make a little magick.

What Is a Magickal Simmer Pot?

A simmer pot is simply a pot of water filled with herbs, fruits, flowers, spices, or other

botanicals and allowed to gently simmer on the stove.

From a practical standpoint, the steam carries the fragrance of the ingredients throughout your home. Magickally, however, you can choose those ingredients according to the energy and intention you want to bring into your space.

Think of it almost like brewing a spell for your home.

As you add each ingredient, focus on its magickal purpose. You might speak your intention aloud, visualize the energy you want to create, or simply hold that intention in your mind while preparing your simmer pot.

You don't need dozens of ingredients, either. In magick, more isn't necessarily better. Three or four carefully chosen ingredients that support the same intention can create a beautifully focused working.

Why Make a Different Simmer Pot for Each Day?

Magickal simmer pot with citrus, herbs, roses and spices for every day of the week

In traditional Western magickal practice, each day of the week corresponds with one of the seven classical planets:

  • Sunday: The Sun - success, confidence, vitality, happiness

  • Monday: The Moon - intuition, dreams, psychic awareness, healing

  • Tuesday: Mars - courage, strength, protection, action

  • Wednesday: Mercury - communication, learning, business, mental clarity

  • Thursday: Jupiter - abundance, prosperity, luck, expansion

  • Friday: Venus - love, beauty, friendship, harmony

  • Saturday: Saturn - protection, boundaries, banishing, endings

These planetary correspondences give us a wonderful framework for creating intentional magick throughout the week.

Instead of choosing ingredients simply because they smell good together, we're going to choose ingredients whose traditional magickal associations support the planetary energy of that particular day.

Before You Begin

For any of these simmer pot recipes, begin with a medium saucepan or small pot filled about halfway with water. If you have Moon Water, include that.

Add your ingredients and bring the water just to a boil. Then reduce the heat to a very gentle simmer.

As the water evaporates, add more as necessary.

While preparing your simmer pot, take a moment to decide what you want to accomplish with it. You can hold that intention silently, say it aloud, write it on a bay leaf or small piece of paper kept safely beside the stove, and/or visualize your desired energy spreading through your home along with the fragrant steam.

And remember: never leave a simmer pot unattended. Check the water regularly and turn off the stove when you're finished.

Want to Learn More About Magickal Correspondences?

One of the things I love about witchcraft is that even a very simple practice can lead you into a much deeper study.

Why rosemary for protection? Why roses for Venus? Why does the Moon rule Monday? Once you begin exploring the history and symbolism behind magickal correspondences, you start developing a much better understanding of how magick is actually constructed.

If you're new to witchcraft, I've created my Beginner Witch Encyclopedia as a free and growing collection of practical guides to help you build that foundation.

You'll find beginner-friendly information about herbs, crystals, tarot, moon magick, spellcraft, psychic development, and other aspects of modern witchcraft, along with resources to help you continue exploring your own practice.

A Few Final Simmer Pot Recipe Tips

You don't have to follow these recipes exactly.

In fact, learning to substitute ingredients based on their magickal correspondences is an important part of developing your own practice.

If you don't have jasmine on Monday, for example, you don't need to abandon the entire working. Look at what you do have and ask yourself what ingredients share the qualities you're trying to encourage.

You can also adjust your simmer pot according to your specific intention. A Friday Venus simmer pot intended for romantic love might look slightly different from one created for friendship or self-love.

Most importantly, don't become so focused on having the "perfect" ingredients that you forget the purpose behind the practice.

Magick isn't about following a recipe perfectly.

It's about understanding what you're doing, choosing your tools intentionally, and learning how to create a practice that has meaning for you.
