What Does It Mean to Be a Witch?

A Beginner's Guide to the Craft

One of the questions I get asked fairly often is, "What does it mean to be a witch?"

Depending on who you ask, you'll likely receive a variety of answers. Very simply, one could say that a witch is someone who practices witchcraft. While that definition isn't wrong, I don't think it tells the whole story.

In my book, a witch is a person who uses their divine connection to the creative forces of the universe to create change within themselves and within their lives. This is often accomplished through the use of Witchcraft - or The Craft, as I like to call it - but the tools and practices are only part of the journey.

Before we go any further, it's important to distinguish between Witchcraft and religion.

Witchcraft Is a Practice, Not a Religion

One of the biggest misconceptions about witchcraft is that it is a religion. While some witches do follow a particular religious path, Witchcraft itself is a magickal practice rather than a religion.

Because of this, people from many different backgrounds may practice The Craft.

Some witches are Wiccan, which is a religion. Others follow traditions passed down through their family heritage. Some identify as Pagan and work with different pantheons of deities. Others practice folk magick, focus on herbalism, or devote themselves to divination. There are even Jewish, Christian, New Age and atheist witches.

This diversity is one of the reasons beginners often find witchcraft confusing. There isn't one sacred book that all witches follow. There isn't one universal set of beliefs. And there certainly isn't one correct way to practice.

At its core, Witchcraft is a practice of magick used to create change. It is a path. A way of engaging with yourself, the world around you, and the deeper mysteries of life.

Over the years, I've found it helpful to think of The Craft as being built upon five principles:

To Know. To Focus. To Cast. To Connect. To Transform.

These are not rules, nor are they steps that you complete and leave behind. Rather, they are qualities that develop and deepen throughout a witch's life.

To Know

The first principle is To Know.

To Know does not simply mean gathering information. It means recognizing that you are a student of life.

A witch understands that learning never truly ends. There is always another book to read, another perspective to consider, another lesson hidden within an experience.

The witch studies. The witch observes. The witch asks questions. The learning never ends.

Historically, witches often served as healers, herbalists, midwives, astrologers, and keepers of wisdom within their communities. Knowledge has always been an important part of the path.

But perhaps the most important thing a witch comes to know is themselves. Their strengths and weaknesses. Their fears and their gifts. Their dreams and their limitations. After all, it is difficult to change your life if you do not first understand yourself.

To Focus

The second principle is To Focus.

In today's world, our attention is constantly being pulled in a hundred different directions. We are distracted by our phones, our schedules, our worries, and the endless noise of everyday

life.

Yet nearly every magickal practice begins with focus.

This is why meditation, visualization, mindfulness, and concentration are such important skills within The Craft. Before you can direct energy, you must first learn to direct your attention. Before you can create change, you must learn to focus your intention.

Like any skill, focus develops through practice. The more you train your mind to remain present and intentional, the easier it becomes to direct your energy toward meaningful goals.

To Cast

The third principle is To Cast.

This is the aspect of witchcraft that most people immediately recognize. It is the ritual, the spellwork, the moon magick, and the magickal tools. The fun stuff.

Candles, herbs, crystals, moon water, talismans, charms, spell bags, and cauldrons all belong here.

Unfortunately, many new witches (often referred to as Baby Witches in the community - a term I am not fond of) get caught up in the excitement of this part of the Craft and lose focus on what they are actually there for.

One of the first lessons many witches learn is that the true source of magick is not found within the tools themselves. It is found within the magickian. These tools help us focus our will and intention, but they are not a substitute for them.

To Cast means taking what you have learned and putting it into practice. It means directing your thoughts, intentions, energy, and actions toward a desired outcome. It is the active participation in the creation of your life.

To Connect

The fourth principle is To Connect.

One of the things I love most about Witchcraft is the freedom it offers.

Some witches work with the Goddess. Others honor both the God and Goddess. Some connect with deities such as Odin, Aphrodite, The Morrigan, or Osiris. Others work with angels, demons, ancestors, spirit guides, nature spirits, or simply the elements themselves.

Some connect with Source, the Universe, or their Higher Self. Others experience a profound sense of spirituality while sitting quietly beneath a tree or walking through a forest.

The form matters less than the relationship. Your path to the Divine is unique and deeply personal. To Connect means developing that relationship in whatever way feels authentic to you.

For me, spirituality is our relationship with that greater creative force. Religion is simply one way of expressing that relationship.

I often think of spirituality as a giant buffet. There are many different dishes to choose from, and each person is drawn to different flavors. Some people fill their plate with one tradition, while others sample from many. In the end, it doesn't matter which dish you choose. They all came from the same kitchen, and everyone gets fed.

Through prayer, meditation, gratitude, ritual, divination, and reflection, we strengthen that connection and begin to recognize that we are part of something larger than ourselves.

To Transform

The final principle is To Transform.

And perhaps this is the true purpose of The Craft.

Many people come to witchcraft because they want to change something in their lives. Maybe they seek mundane things like a new job or a new home. Or maybe they seek healing, abundance, protection, confidence, clarity, love, or a solution to a practical problem.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. But over time, many witches discover that the greatest changes happen within.

As we learn, focus, cast, and connect, we begin to change ourselves. We become more aware and intentional. We heal our shadow selves. We release beliefs that no longer serve us. We develop new habits and healthier patterns. We grow more confident in our intuition and more connected to the world around us. We become empowered.

One of the great lessons of The Craft is that the inner world and the outer world are deeply connected. As within, so without. As we transform ourselves internally, our experience of life begins to change externally as well.

The witch understands that true magick is not simply about changing circumstances. It is about becoming your truest self through your connection with the creative energies of the universe.

So What Does It Mean to Be a Witch?

For me, it means choosing to live consciously, empowered and aware of your place in the universe and the magick within it. It means remaining a student of life, learning to direct your attention, participating in the creation of your reality, developing a relationship with the Divine, and allowing yourself to be transformed by the journey.

The details may look different from one witch to another, but the path itself is one of learning, connection, growth, and transformation.

Ultimately, it is a journey of empowerment and remembering who you really are.

Every witch's path is unique, and sometimes it's helpful to have a guide along the way. If you'd like personalized support in developing your practice, I offer one-on-one mentorship sessions. I've been practicing the Craft for over 25 years and teaching for many of those years, and I'd love to help you explore your own path more deeply. If that sounds like something you'd enjoy, you can book a mentorship session with me. I'd be honored to be part of your journey.
