Planning Your Spell

Every successful spell begins long before a candle is lit or an herb is selected. Taking a few moments to thoughtfully plan your spell helps you clarify your intention, choose the right approach, and align your thoughts, emotions, and actions with the outcome you hope to create.

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is rushing into spellwork before they've decided exactly what they're trying to accomplish. The more time you spend planning your spell, the more focused and meaningful your ritual will become.

Step 1: Define Your Intention

Before gathering any tools, ask yourself one simple question: What do I truly want to accomplish?

Be honest with yourself, choose your wording carefully, and be as specific as possible. Instead of saying, "I want more money," try something like, "I welcome new opportunities that improve my financial stability."

Writing your intention in your Book of Shadows or journal can also be helpful. Putting your goal into words often brings greater clarity and may reveal details you hadn't considered before.

Step 2: Check Your Mindset

Your mindset is just as important as your intention. If you're feeling overwhelmed by fear, anger, desperation, or self-doubt, consider taking a little time to work through those emotions before casting your spell.

Meditation, grounding, breathwork, or simply spending a few quiet moments in nature can help you return to a calmer, more centered state of mind. The goal isn't to become perfectly positive; it's to approach your spell with clarity, confidence, and hope.

Step 3: Consider the Timing

Many witches enjoy planning their spells around the natural rhythms of the moon, the days of the week, or other magickal correspondences. Choosing timing that supports your intention can add another meaningful layer to your

practice.

That said, don't allow timing to become an obstacle. Perfect conditions are rare, and it's better to perform a thoughtful spell than to postpone it indefinitely while waiting for every correspondence to align.

Step 4: Consult Your Intuition

One practice I highly recommend is doing a divination reading before casting an important spell. Tarot cards, oracle cards, or a pendulum all work well for this.

Think of it like checking the weather before setting out on a journey. A reading won't make the decision for you, but it can reveal hidden influences, confirm you're on the right path, or encourage you to adjust your timing or intention before moving forward.

Spell Planning Tarot Spread

Card 1 - My True Intention
What am I really trying to manifest?

Card 2 - The Best Support
What approach will give this spell the greatest chance of success?

Card 3 - Hidden Influences
What obstacle, belief, or unseen energy should I be aware of?

Card 4 - My Part to Play
What practical action should I take in the physical world?

Card 5 - Potential Outcome
If I move forward with this spell while following the guidance above, what is the likely result?

Remember that tarot doesn't predict a fixed future. It offers guidance based on your current path, giving you the opportunity to make informed choices before committing your energy to a spell.

Step 5: Choose Your Tools

Once you're clear about your intention, decide which tools and correspondences best support your goal.

You might choose to work with:

  • Candles

  • Herbs

  • Crystals

  • Sigils

  • Essential oils

  • Written affirmations

  • Music

  • Incense

Choose only the tools that genuinely support your intention. More ingredients don't necessarily make a spell more powerful. In many cases, a simple white candle and a focused mind are all you need.

You're Ready to Begin

At this point, you've done the most important part of the work. You have a clear intention, you've considered your mindset, chosen your timing, consulted your intuition, and gathered the tools you wish to use.

Now it's time to prepare yourself and your sacred space before performing your spell. In the next section, I'll show you how to cast a simple magick circle using the same Ground, Connect, Protect method that I teach all of my students.

Because this category is so extensive, I have decided to break it up into smaller sections to make it easier for you to read.
