Protection Garlic & Herb Bread: A Kitchen Witchery Recipe

There is something inherently magickal about making bread.
You begin with a handful of simple ingredients, combine them together, give the dough time to rise, and then use the heat of the oven to transform it into something completely new.
For a Kitchen Witch, that entire process can become part of the magick.
This Protection Garlic & Herb Bread combines garlic, rosemary, oregano and everyday kitchen ingredients traditionally associated with protection, purification and well-being to create a simple protective bread for your home and household.
Another bonus is that this is a no knead bread recipe! And most importantly, it's also really good bread!
The Magick Behind the Bread
Kitchen Witchery isn't simply about adding an herb to a recipe because a correspondence chart says it's associated with a particular intention.
Think about the intention first. Then choose ingredients whose flavors work together and whose traditional magickal properties support what you're trying to accomplish.
For this bread, our intention is:
To bless and protect the home, clear away unwanted influences, and encourage safety, peace and well-being within it.
Each ingredient contributes something a little different to that intention.
Garlic: Protection & Warding
Garlic has a long history of being associated with protection and warding. In folk traditions, it has been used to guard against evil, unwanted influences and other things you would rather not invite through the front door.
That makes garlic the primary protective ingredient in this recipe.
You can use either fresh garlic or garlic powder. Magickally, I use them for the same intention, so use whichever you prefer or have available.
Rosemary: Protection & Purification
Rosemary is one of the most versatile herbs in magick and has a long history of use for protection and purification.
For this recipe, we're using rosemary to strengthen the protective intention of the bread while also helping to cleanse the energy of the home.
And from a purely culinary perspective, rosemary and garlic were practically made for each other.
Oregano: Protection & Well-Being
Oregano has traditionally been associated with protection, health, happiness and well-being.
I especially like it in household magick because protection isn't only about keeping something bad away. It's also about creating a home in which the people inside can feel safe, happy and supported.
Combined with garlic and rosemary, it also gives this bread a wonderful savory herb flavor.
Salt: Cleansing & Protection
Salt is one of the most familiar ingredients used for cleansing and protection.
In this recipe, think of the salt as clearing away unwanted or stagnant energy and helping establish a clean, protected foundation for the intention you're building.
Black Pepper: Protection & Banishing
Black pepper adds warmth and a little bite to the bread, but it also has a place in protective magick.
It is often associated with protection, banishing and driving away unwanted influences.
While the other ingredients help build and strengthen protection around the home, think of the black pepper as adding a little extra stay out energy.
Protection Garlic & Herb Bread Kitchen Witchery Recipe

Ingredients
3 cups all-purpose flour
¼ teaspoon yeast
1¼ teaspoons salt
1½ teaspoons garlic powder OR 3 cloves fresh garlic, finely minced
1 teaspoon dried rosemary, lightly crushed
1 teaspoon dried oregano
½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1½ cups warm to hot water
A small amount of flour for dusting
Instructions
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, yeast, salt, garlic, rosemary, oregano and black pepper.
Before adding the water, take a moment to focus on your intention.
You might picture your home surrounded by a warm, protective light. Imagine the people and animals who live there safe within it.
If there has been tension, negativity or unwanted energy in the home, visualize it leaving and being replaced with a peaceful, protected atmosphere.
Add the water and begin mixing the dough.
As you stir, move your spoon clockwise. In Kitchen Witchery, clockwise movement is commonly used when we want to attract, build or strengthen something.
In this case, we're building protection.
As you stir, visualize that protective energy becoming stronger with every turn of the spoon.
Mix until the dough comes together into a rough ball.
Cover the bowl and allow the dough to rise for approximately 3 hours at room temperature.
As the dough expands, you can think of the protective energy you've created expanding with it, growing beyond the bowl to encompass your home and everyone within it.
When the dough has finished rising, prepare it for your Dutch oven and lightly dust the top with flour.
Place the dough into your Dutch oven and cover with the lid.
Bake at 450°F for 30 minutes.
Remove the lid and continue baking for approximately 15 minutes, or until the loaf is beautifully browned and crusty.
Allow the bread to cool before slicing.
The Fire That Transforms
The oven is more than simply the thing that cooks our bread.
From a magickal perspective, it represents the element of Fire, associated with transformation, energy, action and change.
Your ingredients began separately. You chose them, combined them and gave them an intention.
Fire completes the transformation.
As the bread bakes, visualize the heat strengthening and sealing your protective intention into the finished loaf.
Optional Protection Blessing
You don't need an incantation to practice Kitchen Witchery. Your intention and attention are enough.
But if you enjoy incorporating spoken words into your magick, you can say this while stirring the dough or just before placing it into the oven:
"Garlic and herbs, protection grow. Guard this home from friend to foe. Peace within these walls shall stay. All unwanted shall go away."
Feel free to change the words. A personal blessing that actually means something to you is always better than repeating words simply because someone else wrote them.
Sharing the Bread
There is one final part of this recipe that I particularly love - sharing!
When you serve this loaf to the people in your household, the act of feeding and nourishing them becomes part of the intention itself.
Protection doesn't always have to look like circles, wards and elaborate rituals.
Sometimes it looks like a warm loaf of bread sitting in the middle of the dinner table.
And that is really what Kitchen Witchery is about. Taking the ordinary things we already do and discovering the magick that's been there all along. If you're new, be sure to read this blog post too!
