Automatic Writing: A Simple Tool for Psychic Development

Have you ever started writing in a journal and suddenly found yourself putting something on the page that you didn't realize you knew?
Maybe a solution to a problem appeared while you were writing about it. Maybe a phrase popped into your mind that felt strangely wise. Or perhaps you began writing about one thing and somehow ended up somewhere completely unexpected.
Experiences like these can sometimes be our first introduction to automatic writing.
Automatic writing is a simple psychic development technique that can help you move beyond the chatter of your conscious mind and access information through your intuition, subconscious mind, Higher Self, or spirit guides.
And the best part is that you don't need any special equipment or advanced psychic abilities to try it.
All you really need is a pen, some paper, and a willingness to see what happens.
What Is Automatic Writing?
Automatic writing is the practice of allowing yourself to write without consciously deciding what you're going to say.
Normally when we write, the conscious mind is heavily involved. We think about what we want to say, choose our words, correct our spelling, reconsider sentences, and organize our thoughts.
Automatic writing asks you to temporarily get that part of your mind out of the way.
Instead of deciding what comes next, you simply keep the pen moving and allow the words to come.
For some people, this becomes a wonderful way to access their own intuition. Others use automatic writing specifically to communicate with their spirit guides, Higher Self, or loved ones in Spirit.
I also find it to be a useful exercise for developing claircognizance and clairaudience because it teaches you to receive information before you have time to analyze it.
That last part is important.
One of the biggest obstacles I see with psychic development isn't an inability to receive intuitive information.
It's the habit of immediately questioning it.
"Did I make that up?"
"Was that really intuition?"
"Did I just think that because I wanted it to be true?"
Automatic writing gives us an opportunity to practice receiving first and analyzing later.
How Does Automatic Writing Feel?
Don't expect your hand to suddenly become possessed by an invisible force and start scribbling profound secrets across the page.
For most people, automatic writing is much subtler than that.
You may simply notice that the words seem to arrive faster than usual. You might write a sentence and then wonder where it came from. Your writing may feel slightly different from your normal journaling voice.
Sometimes you may feel as though you already know the next sentence before you've finished the current one.
Other times, nothing particularly unusual happens at all.
That's okay too.
Like most psychic development exercises, automatic writing becomes easier with practice. You're learning how to recognize a subtle shift in awareness, and that can take time.

How to Practice Automatic Writing
This is the method I used when I first started communicating with my guides. I recommend using pen and paper and a simple notebook rather than typing when you're first learning. Writing by hand naturally slows you down and creates a different connection between your thoughts and the physical act of writing.
Choose somewhere quiet where you won't be interrupted.
If you enjoy creating a sacred space for psychic work, you can light a candle, say a prayer, burn some incense, or do whatever helps signal to your mind that you're entering your spiritual practice. That's what I like to do.
Then begin.
1. Ground and Center Yourself
Take a few minutes to become quiet.
Close your eyes and breathe deeply. Relax your body and allow some of the mental noise from your day to settle.
You don't need to completely empty your mind. That's nearly impossible for most people anyway. You're simply creating enough quiet to notice something subtler underneath your ordinary thoughts.
Need a little help quieting your mind? I created a Free Meditation Bundle with five guided meditations you can use to help you slow down, ground yourself, and strengthen your spiritual practice. It includes meditations for grounding, psychic development, manifestation, releasing negativity, and beginning your day with intention.
2. Set Your Intention
Decide what you're opening yourself to.
If you're practicing general intuition, you might simply ask:
"What would be helpful for me to know today?"
If you're working with your guides or loved ones, invite them into the space and ask them to communicate with you through your writing.
You can also ask a specific question.
In the beginning, I recommend avoiding questions that carry a lot of emotional weight. If you're desperate for a particular answer, it becomes much more difficult to separate
intuition from wishful thinking.
Start with something simple.
3. Start Writing
Place your pen on the paper and write whatever comes into your mind. Anything.
If nothing comes, write:
"I don't know what to write."
Then keep going.
"This feels silly. I still don't know what to write. I'm sitting here staring at this paper..."
Eventually, something usually begins to shift. The trick is to keep your pen moving.
Don't stop to correct your spelling. Don't cross anything out. Don't worry about grammar. Don't ask yourself whether what you're writing makes sense.
Write first. Evaluate later.
4. Don't Read It Immediately
When you feel finished, put the pen down and close the journal.
Give yourself a little time before going back to read what you've written.
This creates some distance between the experience of receiving the information and the temptation to immediately judge it.
When you return to it later, read through your writing and notice what stands out.
Did anything surprise you?
Was there a phrase that didn't sound like your usual way of speaking?
Did you receive advice that you hadn't consciously considered?
Did certain words or ideas repeat?
You may be surprised by what you find.
Try Writing With Your Spirit Guides
Once you're comfortable with the basic practice, automatic writing can become an interesting way to strengthen communication with your spirit guides.
Try writing a question at the top of the page.
For example:
"What would you like me to understand right now?"
Then relax, breathe, and begin writing the response without stopping to analyze it.
You can even turn the exercise into a written conversation.
For example:
You: What do I need to focus on this week?
Guide: Write everyday for connection.
You: How do I know if it's you or not?
Guide: Listen to your body.
Then ask another question based on the response.
Don't worry in the beginning about whether every word is genuinely coming from a spirit guide. That concern can shut the entire exercise down before you've had an opportunity to develop the skill.
Let the information come first. Don't worry, discernment comes with practice.
Automatic Writing or Your Imagination?
This is usually the big question.
How do you know you're receiving psychic information instead of making everything up?
Sometimes you don't. At least not immediately.
The mistake is assuming that imagination and intuition are completely separate things.
Believe it or not, your imagination can actually be one of the ways intuitive information reaches your conscious awareness. I like to think of it as the doorway to intuition.
The goal isn't to eliminate your imagination. It's to become familiar enough with your own mind that you begin recognizing when something feels different.
Pay attention to information that arrives quickly, unexpectedly, or without an obvious chain of thought behind it.
Also look for validation.
If something comes through during automatic writing and is later confirmed, write that down. Those little validations help you learn what your intuitive voice feels like.
Over time, you'll begin recognizing it more easily. Like any other skill, psychic ability gets better with practice.
Keep Track of Your Dreams, Too
Automatic writing isn't the only place where intuitive information can appear. Your dreams can also become an incredible source of symbols, messages, guidance, and psychic impressions.
In fact, keeping records of both can help you notice connections you might otherwise miss. Something that appears during automatic writing may show up again in a dream a few days later. A recurring dream symbol may suddenly make sense after something comes through during a writing session.
This is one of the reasons I encourage students to write things down rather than relying on memory.
If you'd like to begin exploring your dreams more intentionally, I've created a Guided Dream Journal with space for 100 dream entries along with prompts to help you record, explore, and interpret what comes through. You can download a free digital copy of it in my shop.
A Few Tips for Better Automatic Writing
Keep your practice short in the beginning. Five or ten minutes is plenty.
Try practicing around the same time each day for a week or two. Consistency helps train your mind to recognize the state you're trying to enter.
Keep all of your automatic writing in one journal so you can look back through it later.
Patterns and predictions are much easier to recognize when you have a record of them.
And most importantly, don't try too hard.
Psychic development tends to become more difficult when we're straining for results. Stay curious about the experience instead.
Final Thoughts
Automatic writing isn't about producing beautiful prose or receiving profound messages from Spirit every time you pick up a pen.
It's an exercise in listening.
You're learning to quiet the analytical mind long enough to allow something else to speak.
Sometimes that something may be your intuition. Sometimes it may be your subconscious mind working through something you've overlooked. And sometimes you may receive something that feels as though it came from somewhere beyond you entirely.
You don't have to decide exactly what it is every single time. Practice. Record what happens. Look for patterns.
And allow your own experience to teach you.
The more you learn to receive without immediately questioning yourself, the easier it becomes to recognize the quiet voice of your intuition when it appears in other areas of your life too.
