If you’ve ever pulled tarot cards and immediately reached for the guidebook… you’re not alone.
Most people do.
But here’s the truth most beginner resources don’t tell you:
Your first impression is usually more accurate than anything you look up.
The problem isn’t that you don’t know enough. It’s that you don’t trust what you’re already picking up.
That’s where a simple 3-card spread becomes powerful - and it’s just one of many ways you can start reading more intuitively.
A Simple 3-Card Relationship Spread
Start with a clear question. Something like:
“What is the energy in this relationship right now?”
Decide on your spread before you pull the cards. Then pull three cards and lay them out from left to right.
For relationships, you can use:
You / Them / The Connection
Or:
Energy / Challenge / Direction (Advice)
Either works. What matters is how you read it.
What to Do Before You Look Anything Up
This is the part that changes everything.
Before you reach for meanings, pause and ask:
What stands out first?
What feels obvious?
What feels off?
Notice your immediate reaction. Does it make you feel or think of something?
That’s your intuition speaking. Most people override it. Don’t. Look closer, pay attention to what's coming to you. What's it telling you?
Let's look at an example.
An Example Tarot Intrepretation (Relationship Reading)
Let’s say I’m reading for a client who wants insight into a relationship.
I decide to use a 3-card spread to look at:
the energy
the challenge
the direction
I ask:
“What’s going on in this relationship right now?”
And I pull:
The Two of Cups
The Nine of Swords
The Page of Pentacles
The Two of Cups (Energy)
At first glance, this shows a real emotional connection. There’s something genuine here. But I don’t stop there.

My eyes go to the flowers in the corner, then to the body language between the two figures. Immediately, I get the sense that the man is more emotionally invested, while the woman is holding back slightly - moving more cautiously. I say that out loud.
My client immediately confirms it. She’s interested, but guarded. She’s been hurt before and is trying to take things slowly.
Good. The energy is accurate.
Then my attention shifts to the background. I notice what looks like a medical building.
“I’m seeing something connected to a hospital or care facility,” I say.
She gasps. “That’s where we met. He manages an assisted living facility - my grandmother lives there.”
Now I look up and notice the lion. “Is he a Leo?”
She laughs. “Yes.”
At this point, I know I’m fully tapped in. I move on.
The Nine of Swords (Challenge)
The energy shifts immediately.
Even before analyzing anything, the tone feels heavier. The colors, the posture, the expression on her face - it all points to anxiety.

In the challenge position, this tells me the issue isn’t the connection. It’s what’s happening internally.
“This feels like overthinking,” I say gently. “Like you’ve been carrying a lot of worry around this.”
She nods. “I was married for nine years. It didn’t end well. I haven’t dated in over two years.”
That confirms it.
My eyes move to the journal in the corner of the card.
“There’s something about writing this out,” I add. “Processing your thoughts instead of
holding them in.”
She smiles. “I’ve actually been thinking about journaling again.”
Perfect.
We’ve identified the block and a natural way to work through it. No need to stay here too long. I move forward.
The Page of Pentacles (Direction/Advice)
Now the energy shifts again - this time into something more grounded.

I notice the brick path. Brick takes time. Effort. Intention. But once it’s built, it’s solid.
“This feels like a new beginning,” I tell her. “But not a fast one. Something steady. Something that builds over time.”
Then I look at the coin in her hand.
“This is an investment - both in the relationship and in yourself. It’s worth it, but it requires consistency.”
Putting It All Together
This isn’t a lack of connection. It’s a real connection being overshadowed by fear and overthinking.
The potential is there but it needs patience, grounding, and emotional healing to fully develop. From here, the reading would naturally move into deeper guidance but this is the core message.
The Takeaway
Notice what happened here: I didn’t rely on memorized meanings.
I followed:
what stood out
what felt intuitive
what connected between the cards
And I told the story on the card. That’s how tarot becomes a conversation instead of a checklist.
And here’s the most important part:
Your interpretation might look a little different - and that’s exactly how it should be.
Why Most People Get Stuck
Most tarot readers are taught to memorize meanings.
So instead of reading the cards together, they try to get each one “right.”
But tarot isn’t about being by the book.
It’s about recognizing patterns, energy, and how the cards interact with each other and the story they are telling you.
The Missing Piece: Structure
This is where things start to click.
When you use intentional spreads, you:
ask better questions
see clearer patterns
and get more focused answers
Structure strengthens intuition, it doesn’t limit it.
